Contextual post

What am I doing for my final major project?

I have decided to do a research blog for my final major project.  In these blogs I will be researching different drummers and styles, I will also be including some tracks of me experimenting with these styles. I will make a total of 7 posts which are traditional drumming, jazz drumming, funk drumming, time signatures, African drumming, drum machines and a recording journal for my own tracks.

Why have I decided to do this?

As a drummer myself, I have very little knowledge on different historical contexts and styles of drumming. Therefore, I decided doing multiple different research posts would be very beneficial for me and would hopefully help my development as a drummer. Experimenting with different genres and styles will also help my development with songwriting.

Recording journal post:

I decided it would be best to create a separate blog post to include all of my tracks, mixing and recording journal instead of keeping it documented all in the research posts, because I wanted to keep everything organised and easier to find specific topics within my work.

Referencing:

Each reference is in harvard style and have been put in alphabetical order at the bottom of each post.

Books:

"Dilla Time" by Dan Charnas:

I included a summary and relevant notes from this book onto my Drum machines post because J Dilla is closely associated with drum machines because he changed the way producers programmed rhythm, especially on the Akai MPC3000 and other MPC samplers. Which I found would be applicable to include in my post.

"African rhythm and African sensibility": Aesthetics and Social Action in African Musical Idioms by John Miller Chernoff

I included a summary and relevant notes from this book onto my African drumming post because the book includes necessary information to my research topic. It explains a lot on the history and different drumming techniques and sounds in Africa.

Steve reich

I included some brief information on the composer Steve Reich on my African drumming post because he is closely associated with African drumming and sounds because he learnt it whilst travelling to Africa and went on to compose his own music which was heavily influenced by African drumming and sounds.
