Unit 5 & 6

 Blade Runner video

1. Scene structure:

In the intro the scene starts off with a crane shot which moves downwards towards the setup. The camera then stays in that position unit Leon is facing Kowalski, the camera then changes angles 6 times detailing the equipment on the table. At approximately 36 seconds into the scene then see an establishing shot of the whole room and the characters sitting down, we then get a close up detailing the equipment that Kowalski is using. a minute into the scene things start to get intense, especially when we get shot and counter shots of the characters talking and Kowalski is getting frustrated and we hear Leon's faint heartbeats as he's getting more and more stressed. We see as-well at 2:09 that the climax scene is when Kowalski says to Leon "Why is that" and Leon's heartbeat is getting louder and increasing speed. At 02:35, we know the scene is going to end soon as we see an establishing shot and we think things are going to calm down soon, but suddenly Leon starts to shoot.

2. Camera basics (180 degree rule)

This scene uses the 180 degree rule, where the camera's are set on one half of the room and aren't able to cross the line of action otherwise the shots will be inverted and the audience will be confused. Which doesn't necessarily mean the camera can't move around, it just has to stay behind the line of action but can go in any angle within the action line.

3. Camera closeness vs emotional intimacy:

The camera can be used to show the feeling of characters by using different shots. For example, we can see the frustration of both characters as the camera is using shot and counter shot angles as the characters start to argue. Another example of this is when the camera uses establishing shots to symbolise the awkwardness and the tension in the room and how it feels theres a big space between the characters when really there isn't.

4. Sound:

Sound in a scene is crucial to representing how characters feel or how something feels. Examples of where the sound is representing something in a scene in Blade Runner, is when we can faintly hear Leon's heartbeat increasing rapidly as he's getting more and more stressed as Kowalski is asking questions, the heartbeats also get louder and louder towards the end. Another example is when we hear small beeps and sci-fi noises as Kowalski is asking Leon questions, these noises represent how provoked Leon feels and how his brain is feeling messed up and all over the place.
