Unit 8: Evaluation

For my final project, I thought my mixing and my detail on the journal went well. I do feel that I am happy with the outcome as I expected to struggle a lot with this unit but I managed to keep up with the plan which I was happy about, although I thought my research lacked a bit as I mainly focused on the other aspects of the work and I feel like I should've made some more time to focus on my research, I also feel my detail on the journal was good but could've been better and I should've linked things stuff to my project proposal in the journal.

I believe I managed to get most of everything I had planned to do in my project proposal, I managed to do research on mixing by watching youtube videos and websites and research drum beats from different songs to help me with my own tracks, I also managed to document everything in my journal and stick to my plan. Although I wished I would've done research on producing. 

I found mixing to be moderately difficult but got easier after watching a youtube clip and reading through a website, I thought that compression and EQ were the hardest. I also found recording fairly easy as we'd all had experience in the studio before. I found documenting everything on the journal quite challenging as it had to be constantly updated after every lesson which took over time on the other aspects. I thought that the project plan and proposal went really well for me as I completed it quite quickly at a good standard.

I believe the research really helped me with mixing especially with the vocals, and I enjoyed looking into drum beats and Mick Fleetwood's drumming, and it helped me understand EQ a lot better which helped on every track. Although I think my researched lacked quite a bit and i should've done research on compression and producing as well.

Throughout this project I learned the skill of planning, this came from the project plan and planning when i was going to do each aspect of the unit, I think this skill will definitely help me in the future when planning work or appointments or meetings. I think researching will definitely be an essential skill which i have learned through the project for the future as well for helping with work. I also learned the skill of working as a team in this unit, since we had to contribute to recording and all the songs as a band, which will definitely be an essential skill for the future.

If I was to do this project again, I would create a more detail timetable of each aspect, for example, plan what times of the day and how long i would spend on each aspect. I would also research album covers to share more to design ideas for the EP cover since it was mainly Jack, Kai and Lacey who designed it. I would also plan ahead of time different things to research and more topics to look at than what i did this time.

I feel quite pleased with the work now we are at the end, and there are some things I would've done next time which I have listed above, and I am proud of myself for my mixing since before this unit I didn't have a clue on how to mix and I am happy with how I kept on top of documenting every week on my journal, which was one of the things i was expecting to struggle with.

Week 1: 02/03/26 I started this week by looking at different ideas on what to do my project on. By the end of the week I had decided to create a research based project. In my project I will be researching different drummers and styles along with including my own examples of using these techniques. I also created a timetable on what to follow each week for the project. Week 1 Evaluation: I am happy with how my progress is going this week, I managed to pick my choice for the project quite early on in the week which gave me some time to complete my timetable that I will be following for the project. Recording journal

6/8 The first track I began working on was the 6/8 time signature track. I firstly came up with two simple chords which were Dm7 and Fmaj7 which I found sounded well together after I started playing some random chords on the guitar to come up with something. I then created a simple strumming pattern that was played in 6/8. Once I had the input set properly and the gain on the guitar, I then used a tap tempo app on my phone to figure out what the tempo of the song was, which was 31bpm. I did struggle playing the chords for a long time as they were barre chords, so I simply recorded the first 2 bars of the song using a thick and clean amplifier on logic which I picked out, I also added an echo pedal and a retro chorus pedal which I thought sounded very well put together and it was the sound I was looking which was bright.  What am I doing for my final major project? I have decided to do a research blog for my final major project.   In these blogs I will be researching different drummers and styles, I will also be including some tracks of me experimenting with these styles. I will make a total of 7 posts which are traditional drumming, jazz drumming, funk drumming, time signatures, African drumming, drum machines and a recording journal for my own tracks. Why have I decided to do this? As a drummer myself, I have very little knowledge on different historical contexts and styles of drumming. Therefore, I decided doing multiple different research posts would be very beneficial for me and would hopefully help my development as a drummer.
