Unit 9/11: Evaluation

Units 9/11 Evaluation

Songwriting/Rehearsal

I was quite pleased with how the rehearsal process went due to us writing the songs very quickly and I personally think the songs were moderately good. Although, I do wish more time was spent on "Save the world" specifically,  since I found the song was pretty repetitive and boring in terms of the chords and lyrics and I also think it sounded similar too one of our previous tracks called "Move a mountain". Next time I think we should spend more time in writing in order to get the songs sounding better. For example, we could try different song structures and key's to get a change of sound.

Recording

I found the recording process pretty straight forward since we knew what we were doing after recording our EP last year and I think we got the recording finished fairly quickly. One problem we came across during the recording process of "When the time is right" was we had forgotten to press save throughout the session, unfortunately we had already spent the day recording everything and we did end up losing it all so we had to spend another day re recording everything. Another problem that had occurred during recording "Out of the cold" was the output box on the wall was sending cables to the wrong input on the interface. This caused us to lose two hours of studio time since it took a while to figure out what the issue was. Next time I think we now know to press save after recording anything to prevent it from deleting again. I also think next time we record we should double check the output box is sending cables to the correct inputs on the interface, this will insure that we won't waste time again figuring out why the rhythm guitar wasn't recording.

Mixing

In my opinion, the mixing process went very straight forward. I started to understand EQ very well because of the research I had done. Compression wasn't too easy to understand so next time I know compression research will be necessary to help with further mixing projects. I do wish I had added more reverb to other instruments such as the kick, possibly bass and a few more of the guitar tracks. I am quite pleased with how my tracks turned out, although after listening back to "Out of the cold" i'm not too pleased with how the rhythm guitar sounds and would like to do some research on how to mix guitars for further projects.

Mastering

I feel unsure with how the mastering process went. As I was in a rush to finish "Out of the cold" I used a mastering assistant to do it while also checking over levels and all of the plug ins on each instrument. Next time I think I should plan and create a timetable specifically for the mixing process in order to give me plenty of time to get it all done and instead mastering everything myself rather than using the mastering assistant.
